Savannah
First
time we came to Savannah was just because we heard from some friends
that this is a nice town to visit.
We
arrived late at night and stayed at a hotel in the suburbs. It was
just an average hotel, next to a highway exit and a gas station
- the typical hotel that you can see in any town of America.
Nothing
has prepared us for the beauty that we saw the next morning. We
drove downtown and parked on one of the narrow streets not far away
from the river. From the brochures that we picked up at the hotel,
we learned that Savannah is famous for its squares. And we decided
so see all 24 of them.
I would
not say that it was an easy walk, because we stopped a lot to take
pictures and share excitement. But it was such a wonderful time,
that we fall in love with this city.
After
a long walk, we stopped in a cafe not far away from the market.
It was a weird looking small cafe with some strange equipment inside.
The interesting looking character inside served us THE ABSOLUTE
BEST coffee in the US. This coffee reminded us of our European travel,
because this type of coffee we had in Greece, Turkey, and
some other countries. After a one ounce cup you can't fall asleep
for a couple of days...
After
that first visit Savannah had our hearts forever.
And although we have seen each square so many times that it does
not makes any sense to take pictures any more, and the cafe has
changed ownerswith the coffee not being much better than a regular
decaf in a gas station, we still keep coming back.
To
breathe the air full of unique scents, to watch activities and crowds
go by the river, to sit in a park and let the kids play on a play
ground, and to have unique feeling of belonging to this place, to
generations that were here before us, and will be long after we
are gone.
